Liechtenstein: Richest Country In The World
Located between Switzerland and Austria in the heart of the Alps, this tiny nation is known for its banking sector and its breathtaking scenery.
My final destination on my road trip through the Alps was Liechtenstein. I arrived before dusk and was lucky enough to still see the city by day.
Liechtenstein is the smallest yet the richest country in the world and the only country to lie entirely within the Alps. It is known as a principality as it is a constitutional monarchy headed by a prince.
Measuring just 25km in length and 6km in width, the country is barely larger than Manhattan.
I actually had to drive through Switzerland in order to cross the border into Liechtenstein. One of the highlights was Triestenberg which had one of the craziest roads I have ever driven on.
Since it is a mountainous country all the streets are very steep and dangerous but still locals were driving like it was a highway. They must know those roads on the back of their hands.
Liechtenstein is divided into 11 municipalities. Much of its terrain is mountainous, making it a winter sports destination.
I watched some modern art at the Kunstmuseum at the city centre and ate a pizza at Cafe Guflina somewhere high up in Triestenberg.
It is probably a great place to go to during summer but the winter may be a little harsh if you are not planning on skiing or snowboarding.
