Volendam was the location of the former harbor of the nearby Edam.
Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Vollendam, which literally meant something like 'Filled dam'.
In the early part of the 20th century it became something of an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time here.
Volendam's traditional costume is one of the best known examples of ancient clothing (klederdracht) in the country.
Only a handful of people wear it in their daily lives today, but as the locals have recognized its value for tourism you will probably still run into it here or there.
